BEEF QUALIFIES FOR US OPEN
Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston will play at next week’s US Open after finishing tied for first in the qualifying tournament at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey.
The North Londoner finished on 10 under par at the US Open Championship International Sectional Qualifier, following up on his first-round score of 65 with a three-under 69 on Monday. He finished tied at the top of the leaderboard with fellow Englishman James Morrison, who shot two rounds of 67 to also take one of the 14 qualification spots available.
The pair will be joined at Shinnecock Hills by Matthew Southgate, Richie Ramsay, Scott Gregory, Ryan Fox, Tom Lewis, Matthieu Pavon, Matt Wallace, Jason Scrivener, Dean Burmester, Kristoffer Reitan, Paul Waring and last week’s Italian Open champion Thorbjorn Olesen.
There was disappointment for Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington, however, as both failed to finish in the top 14. Westwood followed up an opening-round 69 with a 73 to finish tied for 39th, while three-time major champion Harrington shot two rounds of 70 to finish 23rd, although just one stroke off 14th.
Over in America, Scots Russell Knox and 21-year-old amateur Ryan Lumsden both secured a place at the US Open after taking part in another qualifier in Columbus, Ohio. Knox finished tied-fifth, on seven under par, with Lumsden, who finished runner-up in last year’s Scottish Amateur Championship, a shot further back in joint-10th.
Ireland’s Shane Lowry and Adam Scott were among other players to book their places, with Scott securing a 68th consecutive major championship appearance, stretching back to 2001.
The US Open begins on June 14.
